Scope note
Dipeng (lit. “foundation shed”) (Kroll 2015, 84, 338) was described in the small-scale carpentry (xiaomuzuo 小木作) section of the Yingzao fashi as a raised wood floor system designed for granaries and storehouses during the Song dynasty (Xu 1978, 123; Zhu 1848, shengbu 2.23b-24a; Duan 1815, 6.49b; Pan and He 2005, 134). The primary purpose was to create a wooden framework to elevate the floor above the ground to protect stored goods from humidity and groundwater (Xu 1957, 2727). Mention of dipeng used in common residential architecture can be found in textual sources after the Song dynasty, suggesting a more widespread use of this system (Huang 1629-1644, 15.14b; Lü zu zhi 1522-1620, 3.8b).
