chupu
- Scope note
- Peranakan Chinese covered jars which are oval with a symmetrical tapering profile. The lids (covers) commonly but not always, have a funnel-shaped knob at the top. Chupu are usually designed with Peranakan Chinese motifs which have auspicious symbolisms such as peonies, phoenixes, the eight auspicious Buddhist emblems, butterflies, and other flowers. The jars can be used for double-boiling foods such as soups. They are also used as ceremonial vessels for Peranakan Chinese weddings. Smaller ones were used to store beauty products as well.
