Scope note
Bead-like pieces of pure gold, typically incuse with designs or markings, used as currency and said to have facilitated specific transactions such as in rituals, religious or high value settings. The coins were used in the Mataram kingdom in Java, Indonesia and found subsequently in neighbouring polities such as Bali and Philippines. These coins have also been found in Southern Thailand. Piloncitos is a term given to these coins retrospectively.
