Scope note
In the context of property loss from fire, defensible space is a buffer between a structure and a surrounding landscape. Adequate defensible space acts as a barrier to slow or halt the progress of fire that would otherwise engulf property by clearing plants or objects from the perimeter of a structure. It also helps ensure the safety of firefighters.
