Scope note
Gardens that are located within walls, hedges, fencing, or the arcades of a cloister; usually associated with an architectural structure. The traditional design of an enclosed garden includes a site split into four quarters separated by paths, and a fountain, well, or pool at the center; the earliest-known such gardens of this design were found in Persia.
