kain songket
- Scope note
- Textiles produced by the Malay people in Southeast Asian countries, in which gold or silver coloured threads are woven into a base fabric, typically silk or cotton, creating raised patterns on the fabric. The textiles are usually decorated with geometric, floral or symbolic motifs which bear cultural meanings. Kain songket was historically worn only by royalty but has evolved to be worn as formal attire during festive events, traditional and religious occasions by Malays in Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore.
