Scope note
Self-sufficient, rural built complexes centered on iron production; prevalent in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. They were often located near iron ore deposits and near forests for fuel. The structures served all aspects of ironmaking for the community, from mining to smelting and manufacturing. They typically included dwellings for the community members.
