bark beaters
- Scope note
- Hand tools used to pound tree bark, to soften the bast in the processing of bark cloth. These are common to many cultures, and are varied in form. Many Polynesian beaters are four-sided, with three of the sides grooved to better-pound the bast and with the last side flattened to create a smooth final texture for the textile.
