- In India, structures that were historically used along roads as distance markers. May be associated with communication hubs for relaying messages and shelters for travelers. Typically, kos minars are plain structures with an octagonal base and a tapering cylindrical shaft. They were first introduced by Sher Shah Suri, and later used by the Mughal Empire to mark distances along roads, particularly the Grand Trunk Road during the Mughal era.
