Scope note
A post-World War I conservative cultural movement in France and elsewhere in Europe, defined by a resurgence of classicism, nationalism, and a rejection of the avant-garde. Considered to be a reaction to the shock of WWI. The term is thought to derive from the book of essays by the artist and poet Jean Cocteau, 'Le rappel a l’ordre,' published in 1926.
