Rooted in the history of U.S.-Latin American relations, it also specifically refers to expressions developed during the first half of the 20th century. The term refers either to the art, architecture and political- economic agreements associated with a U.S. leadership and its hegemonic interests in Latin America and to the Latin American art expressions and movements of anti-imperialism that rejected unilateral agreements with the U.S. during this period.
