Mohegan
- Scope note
- Refers to the style and culture of the Mohegan, an indigenous people of present-day southeastern Connecticut, whose ancestral lands are located on the Massapequotuck (Thames River). In the 17th century, surviving Pequot and their lands came under Mohegan control. At one point among the most powerful tribes in New England, the Mohegan population gradually suffered due to illness and hardship. Denied federal recognition for decades, the tribe eventually received recognition in 1994.
