Broad term used to describe the styles and cultures of the Melanesian people located on the several hundred islands between Cape York in Queensland, Australia, and the southwest coast of Papua New Guinea. They are ethnically distinct from 'Australian Aboriginal' people, though they are grouped together with Australian Aboriginal peoples under the general term 'Indigenous Australian.'
