Scope note
Japanese clay humanoid figures characteristic of the Jōmon period. These have stylized features such as large goggle-like eyes and exaggerated bodily proportions, though forms differed and evolved thoughout the period. Some are thought to be fertility symbols, but different forms may have had other functions.
