An Italian word meaning design or drawing, referring broadly and theoretically to the conception of a work of art, incorporating the idea that drawing was the foundation of art; the theory was expounded in Renaissance Italy, particularly in Tuscany. By extension, in Mannerist art theory the term refers to the work of art in ideal or Platonic form which could exist only in the artist's mind. The term is contrasted to "colorito" or "colore," which is the application and use of color in a work.
