Scope note:

Historical standard unit of currency of Florence, Italy, represented by a gold coin struck from 1252 to 1533, having 72 grains of nominally pure or 'fine' gold (3.5 grams, 0.1125 troy ounce). Since Florentine banks were international enterprises, the Florentine florin was the dominant currency of Western Europe for large-scale transactions for many years.
