Scope note:

Time that is measured by direct observation of the Sun, by a sundial, astrolabe, or directly by another device. It differs from "mean solar time," which is keyed to time zones and kept by most clocks and watches. Apparent or true solar time is particular to the very site at which it is observed. Thus it remains distinctive and critical for various reasons, including the observation of Islamic rituals.
