Scope note:

Technique for making copies of images or documents using a device called a polygraph. An early polygraph consists of a blunt stylus and a pen or brush connected by frames and springs that allow the user to trace over the original with the stylus while the pen or brush moves in parallel, copying what is traced onto a sheet of paper or other surface. The term can also be used to describe a technique for simultaneously producing two or more identical writings or drawings. Polygraphy also refers to a method of producing copies of paintings, invented by Joseph Booth, ca. 1788. Polygraphy can furthermore more generally refer to the art or practice of using any copying machine.
