Scope note:

The practice of painting on the fore edge of a book, either with the edge solid so that the resulting image is visible with the book closed, or, in the more usual sense of the term, with the edges fanned out so that the image is visible only when the book is open. The edge may also be gilded or marbled in the usual manner.
