Scope note:

Analytical technique which combines properties of thermal analysis and microscopy to enable the solid state characterization of materials as a function of temperature. A sample substance is placed on a metal strip with a temperature gradient, a melting-point apparatus known as a Kofler bench, thereby revealing its thermal behavior at the temperature at that point when studied with a suitable polarized-light microscope.
