Scope note:

Persons trained in the feudal Japanese art of ninjutsu or a modern equivalent. Collectively, a mercenary force that specialized in spying and executing attacks. Originally these agents had differing names in each region of Japan based on tasks they performed. In most historical Japanese texts they are referred to as 'shinobi'.
