Scope note:

HIstorically, sticks or rods made of wood or other materials, and marked with transverse notches for the purpose of counting or measuring a debt or payment. Some tallies were split, and a debtor and creditor would each retain halves of the sticks which would be cleft lengthwise across the notches, constituting legal proof of the debt.
