Scope note:

Refers to a Mesolithic tool-making culture generally located in inland areas of North Africa, and named after the site at Jabal al-Maqta near Qafsah, or Capsa, Tunisia. It is believed to be partially contemporary with the slightly earlier Oranian culture, which was more often located in coastal areas. It is apparently related to the older Gravettian culture in Europe and its tools are typical of the late Würm Glacial Period, though it seems to have flourished in postglacial times. It is distinguished from the Oranian culture in the variety of its tool kit, including large backed blades and burins. Some North African rock paintings are attributed to people from this culture.
