Anotations

Scope note:

Painter-scribes who created codices in Aztec society. They were responsible for recording important historical events, religious knowledge, dynastic genealogies, and cultural landscapes. Codices were typically made using carbon and other pigments applied to gessoed amate paper, deer skin, woven cotton, or other materials. After the Spanish Conquest, the tlahcuilohqueh continued producing codices, but created a mixed system that combined glyphic writing, pictography, and the Latin alphabet.
