Anotations

Scope note:

Class of air-breathing vertebrate animals characterized by being tetrapods (although some, such as snakes, have evolved modified skeletons), cold-blooded, having an ossified skeleton, usually having scales or horny plates covering their body, and laying eggs with embryos surrounded by an amniotic membrane. Living reptiles include over 8,700 species of turtles, tuataras, lizards and snakes, and crocodiles. Birds (class Aves) share a common ancestor with crocodiles, thus some classifications would group them as technically one lineage with reptiles; more commonly, but they are treated separately. Excluding birds, there are over 8,700 species of living reptiles.
