Anotations

Scope note:

A semisolid, waxy material extracted from sebaceous glands of wool-bearing animals, particularly sheep, genus Ovis. It is a complex mixture of 33 high molecular weight alcohols and 36 fatty acids, including cholesterol. One of the unique properties of lanolin is that it can incorporate up to 25-30% water without separation. Since it is readily absorbed by skin, lanolin is used as an emollient in cosmetics, ointments, leather, and as a rust preventative. Lanolin's role in nature is to protect wool and skin of the animal against the environment, also having a role in hygiene.
