Scope note:

Technique in which paint is applied directly to textiles with only a thin gesso preparation; it was popular in Spain and its colonies during certain periods. The paintings made with this technique lent themselves to being rolled and transported with little damage to the paint layer. For the similar glue-based technique preferred in northern Europe and Italy, prefer "tüchlein (technique)."
