Anotations

Scope note:

The Jewish New Year, celebrated on 1 Tishri (in September or October). According to Jewish tradition, this is considered the day on which all humans are judged and it ushers in a 10-day period of self-examination and penitence. During these ten days, all Jews should review his or her relationship with God, the Supreme Judge. During the service for this holiday a shofar is blown as a call for spiritual renewal and repentance. As the holiday is also known as the Day of Remembrance, it is a time for Jews to commemorate the creation of the world (created during the month of Tishri) and to recall their responsibilities as God's chosen people. It is customary to eat sweets as good omens of the sweet year ahead.
