Scope note:

Miatungusu is a major festival of the Hla’alua people after the harvest of rice. It is traditionally held once every two to three years, now it is an annual event. The festival is devoted to takiarʉ (“the sacred shell”), a sacred being left by the kavurua people. The ritual includes welcoming the gods, initiation, hog sacrifice, wine offering to takiarʉ, expelling evil spirits and the distribution of game. It is believed that through pleasing the sacred shell harvest and prosperity can be brought to the Hla’alua people.
