Scope note:

A permanent, opaque, synthetic pigment having a pale red or reddish orange color. It is composed of red iron oxide, obtained by either roasting yellow ocher or as a by-product from steel-mill waste. It is used in artists' paints, marine paints, metal primers, and as a filler in rubbers and plastics.
