Scope note:

Knitted or woven stockings worn during pontifical masses over ordinary stockings by prelates who enjoy pontifical priviledges. Over the centuries they were of various colors and decoration. After the Second Vatican Council, they have fallen out of common use along with revisions of the liturgy.
