Scope note:

Flat pieces of metal, usually made of zinc or aluminum, used in offset printing. Plates are treated with a photosensitive substance and then exposed to light to create a printing surface. Used as the first printing surface which transfers the image to a rubber medium; the image is then transfered from the rubber to the final substrate.
