Anotations

Scope note:

Some frames on early European panel paintings that were not only attached, or 'engaged,' but were made from the same piece of wood as the painting’s support where the grain of the upper and lower moldings match, visible if the gilding has been stripped away. These are found on small-scale Netherlandish panel paintings, which in some cases would be carved from a single plank, having either a raised profile only on the front of the panel and a flat surface on the reverse, or in some cases with raised frame projections on both surfaces. Examples of these exist from the fourteenth to the sixteenth century.
