Anotations

Scope note:

Plaques designed to be worn on a belt or as part of belt assemblage; may be decorative and functional. Examples are found in many cultures, including Chinese cultures and Precolumbian cultures, such as used for Maya rulers. Usage sometimes overlaps with "belt plates," although items made of stone are typically called "belt plaques"; for items dated to the 18th-century and later, usually metal, worn on belts to signify military rank or affiliation, always use "belt plates."
