Scope note:

Refers to the period and culture from about 6200 to 5500 BCE that developed in central Mesopotamia and spread north, named after the site of Samarra. Know primarily for its painted pottery, some of which was decorated with human and animal motifs, clay figurines, and the earliest known Mesopotamian use of mud-brick.
