Chancel screens surmounted by a cross or crucifix, and which evolved from 'rood beams.' Rood screens are often richly adorned and are sometimes double with vaulting between and a rood loft on top. The French term of 'jubé' derives from the Latin phrase Jube domine benedicere ("Let us bless the Lord"), which is often said by Catholic priests before the lesson while standing in front of the screen; some jubés have a balcony or platform from which to preach to the laity.
