Scope note:

Small cards, often rectangular in shape and made of wood, into which a series of holes are punched corresponding to a row of textile pattern. These cards are designed to control the operation of Jacquard looms by dictating the movement of the loom's needle in accordance with the predesigned pattern. Laced together by rope into long rows, the cards are fed onto the Jacquard loom's perforated, cylindrical feeder, which moves them towards the needle board until they come in contact with the needle. Joseph Marie Jacquard is credited with inventing these cards, and the Jacquard looms they control, in 1801. These cards not only increased the efficiency of the weaving process, but are also considered to have laid the foundation for modern computer programming technology.
