Scope note:

Magistrates in colonial Latin America with jurisdiction over certain territories. They had many administrative and governmental functions such as overseeing the initial trial in lawsuits, serving as the local people’s legal representatives in their business deals and contracts, and examination of the ordinances made by the cabildos (municipal councils).
