Anotations

Scope note:

A species of bird in the Trogon family that lives in the lush vegetation of rainforest zones of Central America. They prefer to carve their nests from decaying trees or stumps. They are vibrantly colored and the males exhibit iridescent tail plumes that can be three feet long during mating season. These plumes were prized by Maya and Aztec cultures, as the resplendant quetzal was closely associated with the deity Quetzalcoatl. This species is the national symbol of Guatemala.
