Anotations

Scope note:

Candlesticks, triangular in shape with candles ascending from the two upper arms, used in the Christian service of Tenebrae, which includes Matins and Lauds during the last three days of Holy Week. The use of these candlesticks fell into disuse in Catholic churches after the Second Vatican Council, but has since been revived in various places. The form of the candlestick developed from candles on the original hearses, which were supporting structures that had trench-like bars with candles, and which were originally used to support or transport coffins.
