Scope note:

Plucked lutelike chordophones of bass register, having a soundbox with a scalloped silhouette, a flat or slightly domed back, a flat soundboard with a round ornamental soundhole, and a long neck with a pegbox with usually lateral tuning pegs. They are strung with six or seven double courses of metal strings, the lowest of which are made of two or more strands twisted together. The bridge is glued in position, having a fret-like strip of brass and a row or hitch-pins along its bottom edge; a lutelike system of bars is fixed under the soundboard. They are said to have been first made by John Rose, in London, 1562, and were popular as continuo instruments in string consorts into the 17th century.
