Anotations

Scope note:

Family containing four genera and 14 species of arboreal apes, plus one fossil species of a different genus dating from the Pleistocene. Their major distinction from other apes are their long arms which they use to brachiate through the trees. The great ape family was previously referred to as Pongidae, and humans (and fossil hominids) were omitted from it, but on grounds of relatedness chimpanzees, gorillas, humans and orangutans are now classified with humans, because they are all more closely related to one another than any of them are to the gibbons, who are now classified in this separate family.
