Scope note:

General term referring to any of more than 30 species belonging to the genus Lepus and sometimes used for species of other genera of the family Leporidae. They have long ears, a divided upper lip, and long hind legs adapted for leaping, but are distinguished form rabbits by significantly longer ears, longer hind feet, a shorter tail, longer body, and having young are born fully furred and with eyes wide open and seeing. The common names of species containing the word "hare" and "rabbit" are not strictly indicative of the genera to which the animals belong.
