Anotations

Scope note:

Small tables on which vessels and dishes are placed pior to serving in a dining room. They differ from "credenzas (sideboards)" in that they are smaller and their form is of a table rather than case furniture. They may be designed so that they back flush against the table or a wall. The term originates in the custom at courts for food to be tasted and proven trustworthy before being served to the monarch. For similar tables used in churches near the altar, prefer "credence tables (religious building fixtures)."
