Anotations

Scope note:

Handwoven rugs with pile in loops, made in Spain in the Alpujarras district south of Granada and elsewhere in Andalusia and Castile. The foundation is of linen, and the coarse woolen pile material runs along with the weft, each color pulled up above the surface in loops as needed in the design. It has about 20 loops per square inch. This technique may have been in use in the area for a long time, but surviving examples probably do not date before the 18th century. The patterns can be described as folk art and the colors, usually two but as many as ten, are strong. The Alpujarra's origins are probably Moorish. The construction of these rugs makes them more suitable for bedspreads.
