Scope note:

Conditions under which aspiring artists learned or learn their skills. In Europe, before the establishment of the state art academies in the 17th and 18th centuries, training as craftsmen took place in the workshop of experienced masters, controlled by the guilds. Gradually the teaching programme began to include more theoretically-based disciplines, set up in art schools/academies.
