Scope note:

Pingbanfang is a tie beam with a rectilinear section that is placed on top of the pillar top tie beam (e’fang 額枋) to support dougong 斗栱 bracket sets (Liang 1981, 77). The term pingbanfang is equivalent to the Song dynasty term pupaifang and is most commonly found in the Gongcheng zuofa (1734) and other books published in the Qing dynasty. Architectural historians use this term to describe buildings from the Ming and Qing dynasties.
