Scope note:

Technology or craft of modelling clay which is then hardened into pottery and stoneware by heating in a kiln or the sun. Ceramics is used as a collective term for all materials made by heating clay. These include pottery, stoneware and porcelain, depending on the type of clay and the temperature at which they were baked.
