Scope note
A dress style that gained popularity in the 1920s as an alternative to the straight-cut chemise dress, and often associated with the designer Jeanne Lanvin. The defining feature of this style was its full skirts, which could be accompanied by either a fitted bodice or a straight-cut design reminiscent of the chemise. The waistline was typically dropped, but it was the voluminous skirt that truly characterized the robe de style. Occasionally, this fullness was enhanced with the use of petticoats, panniers, or hoops.
