Brao
- Scope note
- The Brao are a Mon-Khmer language-speaking ethnic group of approximately 60,000 people divided into multiple subgroups, primarily residing in the southern Lao provinces of Champasak and Attapeu, the northeastern Cambodian provinces of Ratanakiri and Stung Treng, and a single village in Vietnam's Central Highlands. Historically inhabiting upland forested landscapes where they practiced swidden agriculture as their main livelihood, the Brao have experienced significant displacement as many communities in both Laos and Cambodia have been variously manipulated, coerced, or forced to resettle to lowland areas and adopt wet rice cultivation. This resettlement represents a major disruption to traditional Brao land use patterns and subsistence practices that were historically centered on upland forest environments.
